Harvesting

Our nearness to the main distribution facilities aloing the U.S. Border allows our pineapples to be harvested in the field with the highest level of natural maturity, wich makes possible for them to reach full potential of aroma, flavor, and health benefits.

Pre-harvest fruit care

In order to ensure that our MD2 pineapple plants yield perfect fruits, free from sun radiation damage, physical defects, and maximum internal quality, we protect our crops with shading mesh one month before inducing flowering. This way, both plants and fruits, are protected from over-exposure to sun radiation that burns and deform them, from various pests, which attack them during development and pre-harvest of the fruit. They are also partially protected from damage caused by sudden temperature and humidity changes, which are consequence of unexpected weather conditions such a hail, strong winds, heavy rains, amongst others.

We avoid damage to our pineapples to the maximum, so they are harvested manually during this process

Our fruits have a standard of 14 degrees Brix on average

Fruit management during harvest and post-harvest

Once a batch of pineapples approaches its commercial level of maturity, we perform a daily follow up, so the harvest happens when their sugar, acidity, translucence values, and external color are the appropriate according to the needs of the client. Selected fruits are harvested by hand, and immediately packed with great care so as not to damage, scratch, crush, or gash them. Thus, we preserve their natural quality and presentation.

Due to the protection of the shading, fruit is harvested with a lower internal temperature: by 5.0 °C on average, a much better result than by other means. Keeping the internal fruit’s temperature low is key to allow our products to cool rapidly, thus attaining important energy savings.
